Certifications and sustainability standards

A number of buildings located on WSU's campus are LEED certified. LEED stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" Certification and focuses on six categories to establish guidelines, including:

  1. Location and Transportation - places emphasis on strategies to reduce global warming.
  2. Sustainable Sites - includes reducing air, water and light pollution to the environment.
  3. Water Efficiency -  includes reducing water consumption.
  4. Energy and Atmosphere - includes minimizing building energy consumption.
  5. Materials and Resources - include using recycled, renewable, and regional materials.
  6. Indoor Environmental Quality - includes incorporating fresh air and natural lighting opportunities.

4 different levels of LEED certified seals from the U.S. Green Building Council ranging in ascending order from green, silver, gold and platinum

In order to become LEED certified a building must fulfill a number of requirements proposed by the USGBC certification guide. The effort of the LEED certification is to encourage sustainable building development.
