Space utilization
One of the major projects Wayne State has taken on recently is the opportunity to use brownfield redevelopment as a strategy to reduce its waste when creating new sites. Because our urban campus is in the heart of a Rust Belt city, Detroit is historically riddled with old and beautiful retired buildings. The Sustainability Directive emphasizes reducing unnecessary waste by selecting old buildings for repurposing instead of knocking these structures down to create new ones. With old and abandoned structures comes a great opportunity to redesign that site for a new purpose while still promoting the history of the city.
