Green building

The Office of Campus Sustainability is currently working with the Facilities Planning and Management office to create a subset of comprehensive and environmentally-friendly guidelines that will be included in our Building Design Standards. These guidelines, called the Sustainability Directive, set regulations for future building construction on Wayne State's campus, as well and requirements for any renovations made on existing complexes.

This guideline is based on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credentials and set a precedent on how Wayne State is committed to being an environmentally friendly urban campus. These guidelines include efforts to reduce the urban heat-island effect with green roofs by introducing green infrastructure to help with stormwater management, and reducing light pollution during and after construction.
