Earth Day, April 22, 2013
On Earth Day 2013, The Office of Campus Sustainability at Wayne State University is challenging the campus community to take action. We are challenging students, faculty, staff as well as the surrounding community to make a difference in our world by reducing our carbon footprint, curbing waste, using alternative transportation, and buying local foods.
"In past years we've focused on speakers, fairs, and other events to bring awareness to Earth Day," said Daryl Pierson, WSU Sustainability Coordinator. "This year we want to engage the campus in changing behaviors so that Earth Week has a more lasting impact. Being 'green' and sustainable is more than just a one-day activity, it needs to be a lifestyle."
Below are several ways to take action for Earth Day.
Energy -
· Keep thermostats cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer.
· Turn off lights and use natural lighting when possible.
· Turn off and unplug office and computer equipment unless in use, especially at night and on weekends.
· Minimize the number of household appliances in the building (e.g. refrigerators, microwaves, toaster ovens, liquid warmers).
· Keep windows closed in cooled spaces.
· Dress appropriately for the season (e. g. layer in the winter).
· Use community printers and minimize the number of individual printers.
· Use the stairs instead of elevators.
· Learn more about energy conservation and sustainability.
Waste -
· Reduce, reuse, recycle
· Know what items are recyclable (Please observe the recycling posters around campus)
o Recycling reduces our carbon footprint
o Recycling reduces the amount of waste entering landfills
o Recycling conserves natural resources and energy
o Recycling decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that affect the earth's climate
Alternative Transportation -
· Biking
· Walking
· Car Share
· Ride Share
· University Shuttle
· Public Transit
Buy Local Foods -
· Delicious taste and freshness
· Strengthen the local economy
· Support local family farms
· Improved health
· Protect the environment
· Buy local from a farmer, farmers' market, farm stand, CSA, restaurant, retailer, or other local food outlet.
If everyone gets involved then together we can make a difference.
Happy Earth Day!
